Tattoo FAQ

How to heal a tattoo

What does the body do to heal a tattoo?

At Tatz by Megz, I get that getting a tattoo isn’t just about the design; it's also about understanding the whole process, aftercare, and how your body interacts with this unique form of self-expression. When you walk into my studio, you're not just getting inked – you're starting a journey where art and biology come together.

The tattooing process involves delivering pigment deep into the dermis, which your body sees as a foreign invader. This kicks off a natural response, where specialized cells called macrophages work to engulf and carry away the ink particles. As these cells move to the lymph nodes, they slowly fade the intensity of your tattoo over time. But don’t worry, your body doesn’t get rid of all the ink, which is why your tattoo stays visible long after it’s healed.

When your skin gets wounded – whether from a tattoo needle or anything else – your body jumps into action to heal itself. One of the key players here is plasma, the liquid part of your blood that helps start the repair process. When plasma dries, it forms a scab, which is part of the healing process. That's why it’s so important to keep your tattoo clean, dry, and avoid over-saturating it during the healing time.

I make sure to guide you through the entire tattoo experience, from the first needle to aftercare, so that your body and tattoo are taken care of properly.

Where do tattoos hurt?

and how much do tattoos hurt?

As a pro tattoo artist, I know that pain is a big factor when it comes to deciding on your next tattoo. Let's talk about where tattoos hurt the most and dive into some important insights to help you understand what to expect while also keeping things helpful for those searching for tattoo info.

I’ve put together this guide based on my years of tattooing clients, as well as my own tattoo experiences. The discomfort level during a tattoo can vary, and understanding where tattoos tend to hurt can help you prepare for your ink journey, whether you’re going for bold blackwork or colorful pieces.

1. Location Matters

  • Some spots on the body are more sensitive than others. Areas with lots of nerve endings or thinner skin can feel more painful. For example, tattoos on the ribs, elbows, and knees are often described as intense because of their proximity to bones and nerve clusters.
  • The inner parts of your body tend to be more sensitive, like the inner arms or inner thighs.
  • On the flip side, areas with more muscle or fatty tissue, such as the upper arm or thigh, may feel less painful.

2. Skin Sensitivity

  • Everyone has different pain thresholds. What might feel excruciating for one person could be totally tolerable for someone else. Your skin type, hydration, and overall health can also impact how sensitive you are to the tattooing process.

3. Technique and Skill

  • The skill level of your tattoo artist plays a huge role in how comfortable you feel during the process. I take pride in using proper techniques, adjusting needle depth, and maintaining a steady hand to minimize discomfort while delivering great results. My goal is always to make the experience as comfortable as possible for you.

4. Mind Over Matter

  • Mental preparation can make a big difference. If you’re able to stay relaxed and calm, it can help reduce the perception of pain. Deep breathing, staying positive, and trusting your artist’s expertise all contribute to a smoother experience.

I get that pain is a part of the tattoo process, but I strive to create a comfortable, supportive environment for each client. Whether you’re into vibrant tattoos or intricate blackwork, I’m here to ensure you feel taken care of throughout the entire experience.

Keep in mind, no matter where you go, getting a tattoo will involve some pain. But since some areas are more sensitive than others, I always recommend starting in areas that are a little less painful for your first tattoo. This way, I can help make sure your first experience is as comfortable as possible!

Does full color tattoos stay and last?

Well of course!

As a tattoo artist, I truly believe that color tattoos are one of the most vibrant ways to express individuality, and they look amazing on every skin tone. Let's dive into how color tattoos can not only stand out but also stand the test of time. Take this beautiful healed colorful moth I did as an example!

1. Vibrant Expression

  • Color tattoos are all about bringing your personality to life. Whether you’re into bold, bright hues or more subtle, soft tones, I work closely with you to bring your vision to life with precision and flair. The right colors can make a tattoo pop and add that perfect personal touch to your skin.

2. Lasting Beauty

  • There’s a misconception that color tattoos don’t last as long as black and gray tattoos, but with proper aftercare, they can stay vibrant for years. A little sunscreen can go a long way in keeping your colorful tattoo looking fresh! I use only high-quality pigments and advanced techniques to ensure your color tattoos keep their brilliance and clarity for the long haul.

3. For Every Skin Tone

  • Whether you have fair, medium, or deep skin, color tattoos complement all tones beautifully. I’m proud to say that I tailor each tattoo to match your unique complexion, using a range of pigments that blend seamlessly with your skin, making sure your tattoo enhances your natural beauty.

4. Expert Craftsmanship

  • I put a lot of care and detail into every tattoo I create. With a love for creativity, I layer colors and tones to add depth and dimension, whether you’re going for a vibrant floral bouquet or a bold abstract piece. My goal is to bring your colorful tattoo dreams to life with unmatched artistry.

At Tatz by Megz, I celebrate the beauty of all skin tones and the endless possibilities that color tattoos offer. If you're ready to experience the transformative power of color on your skin, book your appointment today and let’s make something amazing together!

How much do tattoos cost?

At Tatz by Megz, I believe in transparent pricing and offering top-notch tattoo artistry. With my professional training, certifications, high-grade equipment, and medical-grade cleaning supplies, I’m committed to keeping you safe while delivering exceptional work. Let’s dive into the details of our competitive rates.

1. Hourly Rate

  • My standard rate is $150 per hour of tattooing. This flexible pricing allows you to budget based on the complexity and size of your tattoo design. Keep in mind that color tattoos or those with heavy saturation often take more time than black and gray shading tattoos.

2. Minimum Charge

  • There’s a $100 minimum charge for all tattoo sessions, even for smaller and simpler designs. This fee helps cover the cost of high-quality equipment, supplies, and medical-grade cleaners to keep everything sanitized and safe. If you’re looking for a couple of small tattoos, I recommend scheduling 2-3 to get the most value out of this minimum.

3. All-Day Session

  • For those with bigger projects in mind, I offer an all-day session from 12 pm to 8 pm priced at $1000. This is perfect for larger or more detailed designs, giving you the best value for a full day of work. Note that this is a tap-out setup—if you tap out early, the full price still applies.

4. Tap-Out Session

  • For massive tattoo projects, like back pieces or large sleeves, my tap-out session runs from 12 pm to anytime and is priced at $1200. This is another tap-out setup—if you stop early, the full price still stands.

5. Deposits

  • A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to secure your appointment. This deposit will go toward the final price of your tattoo.

6. Discount Programs

  • I offer discounts for college students, military personnel, and loyal clients! For all the details, check out the “Booking Policies” tab.

While I specialize in a wide variety of tattoo styles, there are certain tattoos and techniques that I do not offer, and I want to be upfront about them to ensure your experience is the best it can be. Here’s what I don’t tattoo, all with the goal of making sure your tattoo looks its absolute best:

1. Realism Tattoos

2. Trash Polka Tattoos

3. Micro Fineline Tattoos

4. Cosmetic Tattoos

  • Except freckles I WILL do those.

5. Hate Tattoos

  • I refuse to do tattoos that represent hate or promote harmful ideologies. This includes things like Confederate flags, or anything associated with groups or parties that foster division and injustice. For example, I will accept ACAB tattoos, but anything promoting hate will not be tattooed.

6. Couples Names and Anniversary Dates

  • I do not tattoo names of couples or anniversary dates. I prefer to focus on designs that carry more personal meaning or a creative vision rather than names.

7. Areas

  • There are certain areas of the body that come with additional risks or are more uncomfortable to tattoo:
    • Inside the mouth and bottom of the feet carry a higher risk of ink fallout and are extremely uncomfortable, so I do not tattoo these areas.
    • For hands, neck/throat, and face, need approval from me. I require clients to have several tattoos already. These areas are more visible and can be challenging, so I need to be sure you’re comfortable with your decision.
